Jacques Maritain si dedica espressamente a Pascal in due contributi, entrambi pubblicati nel 1923, anno del Terzo Centenario della nascita del pensatore di Clermont-Ferrand: Pascal apologiste e La politique de Pascal, che due anni più tardi saranno rifusi nel volume Réflexions sur l’intelligence et sur sa vie propre. In entrambi questi studi Maritain, che pure accosta Pascal nella temperie del rinnovato interesse proprio all’ultima fase dell’ampia corrente dello spiritualismo e personalismo francese, lo affronta criticamente con osservazioni, prima tra tutte l’attribuzione di un atteggiamento antimetafisico, che tradiscono l’influenza di alcuni pregiudizi ancora in circolazione sul preteso fideismo e antinaturalismo pascaliano e l’inadeguatezza delle fonti testuali – le edizioni delle Pensées – di cui si serve, pur se si avverte una naturale attrattiva e un apprezzamento di alcuni aspetti della sua riflessione.

Jacques Maritain expressly devoted himself to Pascal in two contributions, both published in 1923, the year of the third Centenary of the birth of the Clermont-Ferrand thinker: Pascal apologiste and La politique de Pascal, which two years later would be recast in the volume Réflexions sur l’intelligence et sur sa vie propre. In both of these studies, Maritain, who also approached Pascal in the heat of the renewed interest in the last phase of the broad current of French spiritualism and personalism, approaches him critically with observations, first and foremost the attribution of an anti-metaphysical attitude, which betray the influence of certain prejudices still circulating on Pascal’s supposed fideism and anti-naturalism, and the inadequacy of the textual sources – the editions of the Pensées – which he uses, even if a natural attraction and appreciation of certain aspects of his reflection is perceptible.
